GREATER MANCHESTER RIOTS IN 1868

ASHTON AND DISTRICT

THE IMAGES 0F THE RECORDS BELOW CAN BE SEEN ON FIND MY PAST

THE Ashton-under-Lyne riots took place in May 1868.  Listed below are transcriptions for the prison register involving the men who were arrested and then held on bail awaiting trial in connection with these riots. They show what sentences were handed down and give very good physical descriptions of the men involved plus other details.  There is far more information than would be gathered from Census returns. They were part of a series of troubles that took place in the North West and other areas which were known as The Murphy Riots. That is not a story to be related here as it has received prior comprehensive coverage by Gay Oliver..

Gay's work includes digital images of  Pamphlets,  Bill Posters, Telegrams, Letters to the Home Secretary, Chief Inspectors' Reports, a list of Special Constables signed up to deal with the Riots, a Petition after the event calling for a General Enquiry, and an Inquest Report and Post Mortem into the death of Darcey Dempsey including witness reports. Also included are letters from Henry T Darnton, Mayor of Ashton-under-Lyne.  The Chief Inspectors' reports describe events in Ashton-under-Lyne, Stalybridge and Dukinfield. The original documents are held at The National Archives (H O 45/7991).

This body of work is held at Tameside Local Studies and Archives and can be viewed anytime the library is open. The reference number is Q L 322 and is certainly well worth reading. Tameside Local Studies and Archives is very user friendly and a very pleasant place to visit.

These are extracts from the Felony Register for the New Bailey and Strangeways prisons, you can see these image and much more here. At the time of the riots, Strangeways was the prison in use. The column which contains the places of birth is unreadable in some cases. There was little or no punctuation, but for ease of reading I have added some. As these extracts are from the Felony Register the prison register numbers are not necessarily in strict numerical order. The information contained is quite interesting as it gives physical descriptions of the men detained. In the case of those born in Ireland, it gives their County of birth, and in many case also the actual town. The Manchester Archive reference is M600/4/1 and they can be viewed there on request Monday to Thursday.

The men were arrested in several batches and on different days. Please note that the charges listed in the prison registers are the charges as put before them at the lower court. In some cases the charges in the upper court could have been slightly different. Names, addresses, places of birth, spellings and other details are exactly as shown in the register and may differ slightly from other sources. Obviously the names of those prisoners who appeared before the Magistrates' Court and were not remanded for trial do not appear in this register.
